Ecologist Specialist

Morrison Hershfield, now Stantec, is a leading provider of engineering, planning, and environmental services. We are seeking an experienced Ecologist II to join our Ecology East Team in Ottawa.
Key Responsibilities:- Provide technical expertise in ecological land classification, plant inventories, wetland function and delineation, invasive species identification, and significant wildlife and species at risk habitat assessments.
- Conduct desktop background research and data collection, and prepare general permit applications for field studies.
- Work with senior biologists to plan and conduct field surveys for habitat classification, species at risk, vegetation, wetlands, wildlife, and fish and fish habitat.
- Maintain and organize accurate and detailed field notes and photo documentation records.
- Input, maintain, and summarize data and information in databases.
- Prepare reports and technical memorandums to document the results of existing conditions and impact assessments.
- Identify constraints to construction and mitigation and approval requirements.
- Collaborate with peers across various environmental and engineering disciplines.
- Assist with construction inspection and oversight where species at risk or migratory bird monitoring is required.
- University degree in biology, environmental studies, or a related field.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in wildlife biology, botany, terrestrial ecology, and aquatic ecosystems.
- Consulting experience working with government and private sector clients.
- Strong knowledge of Ontario and federal environmental regulatory and approvals regimes.
- Direct experience working with regulatory authorities in Ontario.
- Applied experience with plant and tree species identification, amphibians, reptiles, bats, birds, and fish, and their associated habitats.
- Working knowledge of the Ecological Land Classification protocol for Southern Ontario and the Ontario Wetland Evaluation System.
- Ability to conduct nest inventories and breeding bird surveys.
- Previous electrofishing and/or fisheries experience, including watercourse habitat assessments.
- Experience with impact assessment and development of mitigation measures.
- Strong technical report writing skills and ability to compile field data into summary reports.
- Experience working in a demanding consulting environment with multiple projects.
- Proficient in MS Office and strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Valid Ontario driver's license and access to a vehicle.
- Valid First Aid and CPR certification is an asset.
