About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and culturally sensitive Settlement Counsellor to join our team at the Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization (OCISO). As a key member of our Youth Program, you will play a vital role in supporting newcomer refugee and immigrant youth in their integration journey.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with our team to design and deliver educational and recreational programs that cater to the diverse needs of newcomer youth.
  • Provide individual and group support to youth, promoting their awareness of community resources and opportunities.
  • Supervise and facilitate summer programming, including Newcomer Youth Centre and Newcomer Orientation Week (NOW) summer programs.
  • Train and supervise program volunteers, ensuring they are equipped to provide high-quality support to youth.
  • Ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all youth, adhering to our organization's anti-racist and anti-oppression policies.
  • Contribute to the development of program materials and resources, ensuring they are culturally sensitive and effective.
  • Work closely with our Program Manager to ensure seamless program delivery and high standards of service.
Requirements:
  • Between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment
  • Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations
Qualifications:
  • Enrolled as a post-secondary student in the previous academic year and intending to return to school full-time in the next academic year
  • Enrolled in post-secondary social sciences, humanities-related field
  • Experience in working with youth from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Sound knowledge of different issues facing newcomers to Canada, specifically refugee and immigrant youth
  • Strong facilitation and public speaking skills
  • Flexibility regarding work location
  • Strong work ethic, leadership, and the ability to multi-task
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is essential
  • Ability to speak other languages that are spoken by the diverse communities in Ottawa is an asset
  • Ability to work with a diverse youth group in a sensitive, respectful, and non-judgmental manner
  • Ability to work as a team member, individually, and with minimal supervision
