Railway Track Welder

Job Summary
The Track Welder is responsible for welding and repairing steel track components. This role requires the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and to use various hand tools. The Track Welder must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 70 pounds.
Key Responsibilities
- Weld and grind carbon steel and manganese track components
- Inspect track work on completion and approve track
- Maintain train operating restrictions in alignment with track standards
- Remove and replace defective ties, rail spikes, and anchors
- Correct deviations in track surface, alignment, and gauge
- Install and repair street and railroad crossings
- Assist in replacing and repairing items such as power-operated switches and insulated joints
- Unload and assist in unloading ballasts
- Unload and distribute track material
- Sort used track material for loading
- Clear brush, vegetation, snow, and litter from railroad right-of-way
- Establish and maintain drainage
- Clean up after work completion
- Comply with track safety standards, operating rules, and safe work procedures
- Complete work, material inventory, and inspections reports
Working Conditions
The Track Welder must be available to work shifts, extensive hours, sometimes away from home, and occasional overtime. The ability to work outdoors in various types of weather conditions with regular exposure to dust, pollen, noise, and vibrations is required.
Requirements
- Federal and provincial welding qualification or equivalent experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED)
- Valid Driver's License, Class 3 in Quebec or equivalent in other provinces
- Collaborates with others and shares information
- Sets direction and inspires others
- Demonstrates active listening
- Experience in similar working conditions
- Knowledge of signals or Rail Operating Rules
- Operator qualifications and experience
- Experience and training in Mechanical
- Post secondary trade education
Training
The incumbent attends formal and on-the-job training. The role is required to complete the training program successfully. The incumbent receives classroom training over a period of 4 weeks at 40 hours per week. The training is primarily on health and safety rules and basic machine operator procedures. Successful completion of the classroom training and on-the-job training is mandatory to continue employment.
