Job Summary

The British Columbia Institute of Technology is seeking a skilled Plumber to join our team. As a Plumber, you will be responsible for carrying out planned and emergency maintenance, repair, and installation of institute water, gas, drainage, air, heating systems, and backflow prevention assemblies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Respond to trouble calls and take corrective action, including troubleshooting problems on a wide variety of systems.
  • Establish priorities and requirements for the Preventative Maintenance (PM) Plan, including items that need to be inspected and maintained for regulatory reasons.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance on multiple systems which are interconnected, as per the PM Plan.
  • Estimate labor and materials for renovations, upgrades, and projects, including reviewing project drawings, sketches, and specifications.
  • Communicate with individuals from various departments within BCIT and external contractors.
  • Continually learn about advances in system and equipment design, and stay current on new technology and regulatory requirements.
  • Upgrade existing systems to more modern and efficient options.
  • Prepare drawings, sketches, layout diagrams, and estimates for internal projects and work required.
  • Adhere to and promote safety standards required by regulatory bodies.
  • Make recommendations and suggestions for improvement to Program Coordinators on various building projects.
  • Prepare and complete work orders, including clearing stoppages in plumbing fixtures, drains, sumps, and sewer lines.
  • Resolve any issues related to natural gas, including cleaning, maintaining, and servicing systems.
  • Maintain an inventory of plumbing supplies.
  • Operate various lifts to get at equipment and systems.
  • Coordinate and monitor the work of contractors to ensure adherence to established standards.
Qualifications
  • A valid Trades Qualification or an Interprovincial Trades Ticket (Journey person status) plus technical education and/or certifications in the relevant building trades industry.
  • Ability to assess blueprints and make recommendations for specific trade requirements.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve related issues.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to maintain currency in the field and learn on the job.
  • Basic computer training and experience.
