Job Overview

The Property and Casualty Specialist, Technical is accountable for the overall underwriting of the Property and Casualty line of business within the Corporate Underwriting department. This includes development and revisions of corporate underwriting guidelines, authority, products, and reinsurance protocols. This position is national in scope and encompasses all Regions and Divisions writing commercial insurance on behalf of the company.

Main Responsibilities
  • Acts as a contributor and Region/Division contact for P&C Corporate Underwriting for other departments, providing direction and support to regions and/or divisions on underwriting matters.
  • Elevates underwriting matters to the Manager or AVP, Corporate Underwriting, as necessary.

Key Accountabilities:
  1. Underwriting Quality and Risk Appetite: Engages in underwriting decision-making when risks fall outside the scope of regional authority.
  2. Product Development: Works closely with other Head Office Departments (Pricing, ERM, Corporate Communications, Claims, IT) in the development and introduction of new or amended products.
  3. Underwriting Guidelines: Identifies and implements necessary changes to underwriting and pricing guidelines to support corporate objectives, underwriting philosophy, and changes in the marketplace.
  4. Review of existing and creation of new alternative distribution agreements.
  5. Portfolio analysis: Understands trends, profitability, and market competitors.

Job Requirements:
  1. Bridges technical Property and Casualty underwriting skills with strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
  2. Possesses a university degree or college diploma in a relevant discipline.
  3. Demonstrates exceptional communication, analytical, and negotiation skills.
  4. Maintains a high-performance culture and promotes collaboration, teamwork, and professionalism.
  5. Fluently communicates in both English and French, oral and written, and has excellent computer literacy and analytic skills.
  6. Prior experience with agribusiness underwriting is an asset.
