Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Orthopaedic Technologist to join our team at Humber River Health. As a key member of our Fracture Clinic, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the success of our team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform a range of orthopaedic interventions, including splint/cast and dressings/bandages application, windowing/wedging casts, trimming, bi-valving casts, bandages and splints, removal/repair/re-enforce casts, removal of sutures/wires/pins/external fixators, and adjusting and removing orthopaedic devices.
  • Assist physicians on inpatient units and the plastics clinic with orthopedic procedures, including wound care, aspirations, minor surgical procedures, and fracture reductions.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients' conditions and develop orthopedic care plans in collaboration with the family and the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Process physician orders for diagnostics, results, etc.
  • Document care provided in the patient record.
  • Provide education related to orthopaedic treatments and discharge instructions/follow-up care to patients and families.
  • Maintain inventory of orthopaedic supplies and devices, ensuring equipment and supplies are adequate, in safe working order, and are reported as needed for repair and replacement.
  • Ensure work area, equipment, and supplies are hazard-free and report any health and safety concerns appropriately and in a timely manner.
Requirements
  • Graduate of a recognized Orthopaedic Technologist program sanctioned by the Canadian Society of Orthopaedic Technologists (CSOT), apprenticeship program, or sponsorship by an Orthopaedic Physician or Graduate from a Bachelor's Degree in Health and/or related field.
  • Current registration by the Canadian Society of Orthopaedic Technologists (CSOT).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BCLS) certification.
  • Minimum 3 years of recent experience as an Orthopaedic Technologist, including but not limited to, performing interventions focused on splint/cast and dressings/bandages application, windowing/wedging casts, trimming, bi-valving casts, bandages and splints, removal/repair/re-enforce casts, removal of sutures/wires/pins/external fixators, application of principles of surgical asepsis, preparing for minor surgical procedures application, setting up surgical field for injections and minor procedures, and adjusting and removing orthopaedic devices.
  • Knowledge/Understanding of anatomical structures and relationships, description of orthopaedic conditions/injuries, casting including related orthopaedic technologies, theory and application of skin, skeletal, and manual traction, application of aseptic technique in dressing change, removal of sutures, staples, pins, and external fixators, and setting up surgical field for injections and minor procedures.
  • Demonstrated abilities to interpret simple fractures and dislocations on x-ray film, excellent customer service, effective and efficient time management and organization skills, effective interpersonal and communication skills, and work independently and within a team environment.
  • Energetic, highly motivated, detail-oriented individual with strong work ethic and abilities for quick cast or appliance application.
  • Demonstrated commitment to life-long learning and evidence-based practice.
  • Plastics Clinic, Fracture Clinic, and/or hospital experience preferred.
  • Nursing/Medical background an asset.
  • Excellent attendance and discipline-free record.
