Education Support Specialist

The Education Assistant will work under the general direction of the classroom teacher and the supervision of the school principal to support students with diverse abilities. These abilities may include Autism Spectrum Disorder, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, diverse cognitive abilities, chronic health conditions, trauma, and complex challenging behaviours. The successful candidate will assist students with physical and personal care, life and social skills development, academic assistance, and positive behaviour support.
Responsibilities:- Participate in the implementation of supports outlined in the Inclusive Education Plan (IEP).
- Assist students with effective strategies for personal, social, and intellectual competencies.
- Reinforce the educational program by practicing skills of adapted or adapted classroom materials to meet the needs of students.
- Assist in the planning and acquisition of life and social skills aimed at the reinforcement of positive behaviours.
- Monitor and reinforce behaviour for students displaying moderate behaviour issues.
- Provide input to the IEP and student progress reports and perform recordkeeping functions.
- Provide personal care assistance, such as toileting, feeding, diapering, and dressing.
- Implement the health care plan for students with chronic health conditions.
- Assist with educational support programs, such as speech practice and physical and/or occupational practice.
- Supervise assigned students with specific support needs in and out of the classroom and in the community.
- Successful completion of a one-year Education Assistant Program certificate from a recognized accredited institute.
- Successful completion of a current autism course of no less than 25 hours.
- Minimum of 180 hours of supervised practicum by an accredited institute in a school setting.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Ability to support students in an inclusive setting.
- Ability to serve as a role model for students.
- Ability to be calm, empathetic, and compassionate towards students.
- Ability to solve problems related to the position.
- Ability to work with disagreeable and/or hostile conditions occasionally.
- Ability to assist teachers in adapting and modifying the academic programs of students.
- Ability to be flexible and adaptable to student needs.
- Ability to be motivated and work interdependently.
- Ability to perform the physical requirements of the job.
- Ability to observe and document objectively for student files.
This is a casual on-call position with no guarantee of hours. Work may be offered at the Elementary, Middle, and/or Secondary level. The successful candidate will be required to work in a variety of settings, including classrooms, schools, and community settings.
Salary:$28.64 per hour, as per C.U.P.E Local 4165 Agreement.
