The Occupational Health and Safety Specialist will play a crucial role in promoting a health, safety, and environmental culture within our organization. This position will support our Aecon Foundations division and be based in Toronto, Ontario.

About the Role

  • Job Summary: The Occupational Health and Safety Specialist will be responsible for actively promoting a health, safety, and environmental culture throughout all levels of employees, adhering to Aecon's Health, Safety, and Environmental Manual.
  • Key Responsibilities:
    • Conduct thorough safety orientations for workers, owners, and clients.
    • Train employees on Aecon's Health, Safety, and Environmental Manual.
    • Coordinate training sessions for employees (e.g., fall protection, confined space entry, WHMIS, respiratory protection, emergency response).
    • Perform regular workplace inspections, behavior-based observations, and audits.
    • Update Material Safety Data Sheets as required.
    • Develop site-specific safety plans, including emergency response and environmental or site safety plans.
    • Distribute safety materials, supplies, and equipment.
    • Prepare safety presentations for clients.
    • Promote the Aecon safety system to potential clients.
    • Analyze EHS data trends and recommend corrective actions.
    • Assist with workers' compensation claims.
    • Develop return-to-work and modified work programs.
    • Investigate incidents.
    • MEDIATE health and safety issues for resolution.
    • Liaise with government agencies as necessary.
    • Participate in external safety audits.
    • Coordinate environmental matters.
    • Gather and provide EHS statistics.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3-5 years experience in the construction industry in a Health and Safety role.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST), National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) and/or Certificate of Recognition (COR) Auditor preferred.
  • Intermediate to advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to communicate effectively, excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent meeting and training facilitation skills.
  • Adaptable and flexible to an ever-changing environment.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving abstract.
  • Ability to travel frequently, potentially working on various project locations across Canada.

Compensation

We are offering a competitive salary range of $80,000 - $110,000 per annum, depending on experience, plus benefits and opportunities for professional growth and development.
