Job Summary

This is a leadership position responsible for overseeing daily activities conducted by a team of crew members. The Crew Leader will ensure the team has the necessary manpower to perform tasks and will prioritize work based on customer needs and initiative.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the Panel Technician and Rail Technical Advisor to delegate work flow and prioritize tasks throughout the shift.
  • Ensure equipment and housekeeping checklists are completed properly and on time.
  • Facilitate Turn Over meetings and drive the emphasis on safety over production in these meetings.
  • Audit and work alongside crew members to provide constructive feedback during quarterly reviews.
  • Support all activities sponsored by Railserve and the Customer, including team building events outside of work.
  • Flexibility in scheduling.
  • Support the area Training Coordinator in developing the crew's training and tracking opportunities for crew members to learn new areas.
  • Be willing to participate in training for yourself that focuses on leadership and other management principles in the future.
  • Work with other members of the department's natural work teams and subject matter experts to assure uninterrupted Site Logistics facility operations and avoid unplanned events.
  • Actively participate in the Site Logistics EH&S programs, including peer to peer auditing, Safe Work Permitting, and Isolation of energy.
  • Utilize established tools, processes, and procedures, and assist in the review and update process of these procedures.
  • Comply with the department's Operating Discipline Management System (ODMS).
  • Must wear personal protective equipment, including a respirator and/or other PPE that covers the face.
  • Be flexible with your expectations as the role will evolve and adapt to changing circumstances.

A. Education and/or Experience

  • High School diploma (or equivalent) preferred.
  • 6+ months experience required.

B. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Remain neutral to speculations made by crews and limit the amount of time spent discussing these issues unless it will lead to a solution or an understanding.
  • Promote a healthy working relationship that doesn't only set your own crew up for success but instead ensures success for all crews.
  • Ensure we are able to meet customer expectations, this could mean tracking max loads and heels.
  • Have a knowledge of both the customer's and Railserve's global tools, GVP, My learning, Observation and Interaction audits.
  • Remain calm and natural in tense situations that involve both mechanical and people issues.
  • Superior communication skills; Must be comfortable engaging in a variety of different communicative modes (verbal, non-verbal, and written) and being attuned to others through strong active listening skills.
  • Ability to assess multiple tasks and develop a plan to complete them in a timely manner.
  • Must have the ability to work well with others as part of a team.

C. Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

E. Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

F. Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee is occasionally required to sit; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs and/or ladders quickly; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move heavy weights (over 50 pounds). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

This incumbent regularly works in an outdoor environment, in various weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic chemicals, and must be able to wear a respirator and/or other PPE that covers the face. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
