Job Overview

This role involves leading a team of mechanical engineers and designers to develop high-quality products that meet our stringent standards. As a key member of our product development team, you'll be responsible for managing resources, designing products, and ensuring their efficient utilization.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Lead and mentor a team of Mechanical Engineers and Designers in developing innovative mechanical products.
  2. Participate in headcount planning, budgeting, and product roadmap discussions to ensure seamless execution.
  3. Develop and maintain metrics for efficient resource utilization to optimize productivity.
  4. Oversee engineering resource usage and progress to guarantee timely completion of projects.
  5. Manage the mechanical product development process and suggest improvements to enhance quality and efficiency.
  6. Collaborate with vendors to ensure components are manufactured as designed, adhering to our high standards.
  7. Create, approve, revise, and maintain design documentation to facilitate effective communication.
  8. Draft specifications and participate in design reviews to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  9. Innovate design approaches to keep IMAX at the forefront of technology, leveraging your expertise in precision mechanical design.
  10. Provide mechanical engineering support to Procurement, Quality, Manufacturing, Installation, and Technical Services teams.
  11. Collaborate with Optical, Electrical, and Software teams to ensure robust system architectures, driving innovation and excellence.
  12. Build and right-size the mechanical team, identifying projects for contract work as needed, to ensure optimal resource allocation.
  13. Address issues and improve IMAX's products with the cross-functional team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  14. Triage requests to address those with the most business impact first, prioritizing tasks effectively.
  15. Negotiate and compromise to gain buy-in from the cross-functional team, promoting collaboration and unity.
  16. Identify and improve deficiencies in product development processes, driving process optimization and enhancement.

Requirements:

  • 3+ years of experience in Mechanical Engineering leadership roles.
  • 7-10 years of hands-on experience in precision mechanical design, with proficiency in GD&T principles for complex parts specification.
  • 5+ years using Solidworks or similar tools, including PDM systems, with excellent understanding of weldments, coatings, platings, and precision mechanical engineering.
  • Ability to document mechanical product requirements, designs, and implementations effectively.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with excellent time management and multitasking abilities.
  • Experience following a formal design/development process, with a quality mindset and passion for continuous improvement.
  • Familiarity with opto-mechanical components, high power laser systems, and thermal design considerations is a plus.
  • Familiarity with optics, regulatory requirements, electrical, and embedded software is beneficial.
  • Ability to work with a multi-disciplinary design team, with a PEng designation highly desired.

Estimated Salary: $120,000 - $180,000 per year, depending on location and experience.
