Job Responsibilities
- Work closely with the care team in direct care activities such as assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating interventions for Emergency Department patients.
- Participate in discharge and/or care planning, function as a patient advocate, and teach patients and their families about illness/injury and overall health promotion and wellness.
- Enhance quality of life from the perspective of the patient/family by establishing, maintaining, and enhancing therapeutic relationships based on respect.
- Provide care to patients across the lifespan and their families, based on stable and/or predictable states of health, and recognize and respond to unexpected patient outcomes by communicating and collaborating with other members of the healthcare team.
- Document care provided and response to incidents in accordance with established policies, procedures, and Emergency Department expectations.
- Consult, confer, and collaborate with other healthcare providers as needed.
Training and Education Program
The Northern Health Regional Emergency Department Education Program (REDEP) utilizes a standardized, evidence-informed online curriculum offered by Elsevier, called Emergency Nursing Orientation (ENO). REDEP combines Elsevier's ENO online curriculum with a skills/simulation lab and clinical practicum to prepare registered nurses to provide safe and competent emergency nursing care at a novice level.
Program Details
- Introduce the basic topics, concepts, and practice guidelines that are fundamental to emergency nursing.
- Develop the specialized skills, knowledge, attitudes, and judgment required to provide safe, competent, and individualized care to the emergency patient.
- Promote professionalism in emergency nursing.
- There are two training positions available for 2024/2025.
- Northern Health provides placement support and funding for tuition, textbooks, and travel expenses for clinical placements, as required.
- Successful candidates may be required to complete pre-requisite courses through part-time distance education, on their own time, prior to assuming this position.
- Learners should expect to make a 4-month commitment for this education, which includes online and in-person learning.
- Additional study time, outside of scheduled hours, may be required to successfully complete the program.
- Flexibility for practicums is necessary.
- Prior experience on an acute care ward (medical/surgical) is preferred.
- Current BLS certification within a year is mandatory prior to the skills/simulation.
- Preference for participants who have completed an electrocardiogram (ECG) course prior to beginning REDEP.
- Applicants must successfully complete the education program prior to working in the department.
- Upon successful completion of the education program, Northern Health requires an 18-month return of service in a regular position in the area of nursing applicable to the education program.

Qualifications
- Graduation from a recognized program for Practical Nurses and one year of recent experience working in a related area of care.
- Current practicing registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrate ability in nursing practice related to caring for patients in the Emergency Department.
- Demonstrate knowledge of pathophysiology related to common diagnoses.
- Demonstrate ability to perform nursing assessments and interventions.

- Demonstrate skill in performing LPN Scope of Practice and standards of care.
- Physical ability to perform the position.
