Job Summary

The Mobile Equipment Operator plays a critical role in our scrap metal processing yard, operating mobile cranes, magnet cranes, mobile shears, and stationary shears to process scrap materials, load/unload scrap from trucks or railcars, and move scrap within the yard as needed. This position requires attention to detail, physical stamina, and excellent problem-solving skills. As a key member of our team, you'll be responsible for maintaining equipment, ensuring safety protocols are followed, and contributing to the efficient operation of our yard.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Familiarize yourself with Gerdau's Safety, Environmental, and Routine procedures specific to the yard, adhering to them at all times.
  • Conduct daily inspections of mobile shears, magnet cranes, and stationary shears, documenting findings on checklists to ensure equipment is well-maintained and in proper working order.
  • Perform daily preventive maintenance on equipment, including lubrication, greasing, fueling, and keeping cabs clean to ensure optimal performance.
  • Inspect scrap materials for proper grade, safety concerns (e.g., tanks, cylinders), and environmental considerations during shearing operations.
  • Shear unprepared material into prepared state, accurately identifying size, thickness, and physical dimensions.
  • Operate magnet cranes to load/unload scrap from customer vehicles into designated piles or railcars for shipping.
  • Mobilize equipment to lift and move scrap between areas of the yard, ensuring efficient workflow.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Assist with yard housekeeping efforts and perform other duties assigned by management to maintain a clean and organized workspace.
  • Aid colleagues in daily operational tasks essential to yard safety, efficiency, and profitability.
  • Provide input and contributions toward problem-solving initiatives as required.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • High School Education or equivalent preferred.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to develop your skills and knowledge as a Gerdau employee.

Compensation and Benefits:
