Accounting Assistant/Bookkeeper

About the Role
The United Church of Canada is seeking a highly skilled Accounting Assistant/Bookkeeper to join our team. This is a permanent full-time position at 35 hours/week.
Job Summary
The Accounting Assistant/Bookkeeper will provide financial support to the Regional Staff Lead, Shining Waters, and the Canadian Shield and Shining Waters Regional Councils. The successful candidate will be responsible for accurate and timely financial transaction recording and reporting, as well as other accounting and administrative duties.
Key Responsibilities
- Verify and enter invoices in the accounting system for payments
- Check accuracy of reimbursement expenses
- Prepare weekly EFT payments, wire transfers, and/or cheque runs
- Perform monthly credit card reconciliations
- Respond to vendor inquiries and reconcile vendor accounts
- Enter payments received in the accounting system weekly
- Generate invoices, account statements, reports, and donation tax receipts
- File accounting documents
- Assist in the preparation of financial statements, variance analysis, and audit working papers/support documentation
- Perform month-end closings
- Balance subledger accounts to reconcile accounts, including bank reconciliation
- Manage grant applications process in Shining Waters Regional Council and other administrative functions
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in Accounting, Business, or equivalent
- Minimum 2 years of bookkeeping and/or general accounting experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience
- Demonstrated proficiency with an accounting software (QuickBooks preferred) and Microsoft Office (including Excel)
- Knowledge of and experience with full cycle accounts receivable, accounts payable, and general accounting practices and procedures
- Detail-focused with solid planning and prioritizing skills to complete multiple tasks on time independently
- Ability to work collaboratively, both as a team player and task leader, to produce high-quality work
- Relate in a friendly, open manner with others
Working Conditions
The United Church of Canada has adopted a hybrid workplace model, providing flexibility for this position. The incumbent will work from both a home office and the Regional Council Office located in Guthrie (Barrie) Ontario. The incumbent will be provided, for work purposes, use of secure devices and must be available by email, phone, Teams, or Zoom during regular office hours Monday to Friday.
Compensation
The target hiring range for this position is $45,259 to $51,582 with the ability to progress to a maximum of $60,344. This is based on category 3 on our salary range. Placement on the salary range will be based on factors such as market condition, internal equity, candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role. Pension and group benefit plans coverage and annual vacation round out this compensation package.
