Job Summary

Cornwall Community Hospital is participating in a Ministry of Health initiative to hire Clinical Externs through the Enhanced Extern Program. This transitional program was developed to support human resources and provide an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge, develop important skills for a career in healthcare, gain patient experience, and work and learn from our nursing and allied health teams.

Responsibilities
  • Assist patients with mobility assistance, such as lifting, turning, positioning, ambulating, and other care activities as needed and appropriate for the clinical area and population served.
  • Provide support to the patient care teams by assisting patients with Activities of Daily Living, such as feeding, dressing, and other care activities.
  • Ensure skin integrity and provide comfort measures, activation, companionship, and social engagement.
Requirements
  • Currently enrolled in and/or completed one of the following: nursing students in any year of study of an approved baccalaureate nursing program, nursing students in any year of an approved practical nursing program, occupational therapy students in any year of study in a training program accredited by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT), paramedic students in second year of study in a training program approved by the Paramedic Program, physiotherapy students in any year of study in a training program accredited by Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada (PEAC), respiratory therapy students in their second and third year of a training program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Respiratory Therapy Education, or internationally trained nurses without CNO licensure.
  • Current BCLS certification.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment, demonstrated responsibility and skills to work independently, knowledge of body mechanics, and safe patient lift and transfer practices.
  • Effective communication skills to provide ongoing support and care for diverse patients and communicate any concerns or changes in the patient's condition.
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, commitment to maintain dignity and self-esteem of patients and families in delivery of care, proficient computer/technological skills, and ability to work under pressure, request assistance when required, and adapt to change rapidly.
