Key Responsibilities
  • Teach Grade 6/7 students in a rural community school setting
  • Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that integrate experiential learning activities and on-the-land curriculum
  • Work collaboratively with First Nation government, Daylu Dena Council Educational Support Workers, community Elders, and families to promote greater community involvement in school-based activities and educational programming
  • Provide individualized support to students through Student Learning Plans, Behaviour Plans, Safety Plans, and Individual Education Plans
  • Communicate effectively with parents and caregivers to establish cooperative and authentic connections
  • Develop and maintain strong and respectful relationships with students, their families, and the community
Requirements
  • Bachelor of Education or equivalent
  • Recent practicum or experience teaching at an intermediate level, with students performing at wide-ranging levels of achievement
  • Experience integrating experiential learning activities into the core curriculum
  • Recent experience working with First Nation students and families in an educational setting
  • Experience teaching in a multi-grade class
  • Experience working in a rural community school
Desired Qualities
  • Eagerness to learn about and integrate Liard First Nation (Kaska Dene) culture & worldview, and the Dene zagi (Kaska language) in the classroom
  • Ability to work collaboratively and maintain an authentic relationship with the Liard First Nation government, Daylu Dena Council Educational Support Workers, community Elders, and families
  • Keenness to live, work, and participate as an active member of the Watson Lake community
  • Strong classroom management, planning, and organizational skills
  • Solid understanding of a philosophy of inclusive education
What We Offer

Relocation may be available. In communities outside of Whitehorse, there may be affordable though modest rental accommodation provided by Yukon Housing Corporation. Private accommodation is limited. If not available, candidates will need to find their own private accommodation, with assistance where possible from the First Nation School Board.
