Job Description

As a Spiritual Health Practitioner at Providence Health Care, you will play a vital role in providing comprehensive spiritual care and emotional support to patients, families, and healthcare staff. Reporting to the Director of Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care, you will work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to assess spiritual needs and provide support that is respectful of diverse beliefs and cultural backgrounds.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess and provide spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, and staff through counseling and supportive presence.
  • Promote the spiritual well-being of patients and residents through listening, prayer, and group support.
  • Attend and participate in program-based care team meetings, rounds, and other meetings as required.
  • Receive referrals from all disciplines and respond in a timely manner, creating and implementing follow-up plans as needed.
  • Document spiritual assessments and significant interventions in patient/resident medical records.
  • Collaborate with spiritual/cultural representatives and clergy in the community, supporting religious/spiritual leaders and faith-specific volunteer visitors in their ministry.
  • Provide spiritual and emotional support to staff during times of crisis, including active listening, supportive presence, and conducting rituals/memorials/debriefing for patients/staff who have passed away.
  • Maintain daily records of spiritual care activity offered to patients, residents, and staff, submitting these on a timely basis as required.
  • Mentor and support volunteer visitors who provide ministry to patients/residents through religious/spiritual visits and participation in group events.
  • Provide support as a preceptor to Clinical Psycho-Spiritual Education students, including on-site orientation, ongoing support, coaching conversations, and providing feedback to the student and educator.
  • Plan and participate in facility-wide celebrations, such as Worship Services and Memorial Services for individuals or groups.
  • Encourage staff awareness of and respect for different expressions of spirituality through in-services and one-on-one conversations.
  • Support patients, residents, and their families who are considering or engaged in the MAiD process, being aware of the sensitivities of MAiD requests within Catholic Health and responding within these expectations.
  • Participate in sharing on-call and/or back-up on-call duties, as required, and be available to respond to organizational emergencies and act as a liaison during crisis intervention.
  • Participate in Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care team activities, including team meetings, Spiritual Health Week, retreats, and huddles.
  • Provide all spiritual health support in accordance with the expectations of Catholic Healthcare principles and Health Ethics Guidelines, participating in clinical ethics discussions/reviews.
  • Engage in research projects and opportunities both within and outside of the department.
Requirements
  • A Master's degree in Theology, Public and Pastoral Leadership, Spiritual Practices, or other relevant theological/spiritual studies from an accredited theological institution.
  • Minimum of one advanced unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE), preferably two advanced units, plus two years of direct or related experience or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Certified Spiritual Care Practitioner with CASC/ACSS or committed to achieving certification within two years.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage counseling theories, interventions, and intentional supportive activities to support patients, residents, and their families.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage in crisis intervention, such as attending Code Blues or other critical incidents.
  • Ability to navigate electronic medical records (Cerner), pagers, and other communication channels.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to support all expressions of spirituality without imposing personal religious beliefs.
  • Demonstrated ability to approach spiritual health issues in a person-centered manner with insight, discernment, and flexibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively handle stressful situations with sensitivity, compassion, gentleness, caring, and approachability.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in accordance with Providence Health Care's Mission, Vision, and Values.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
