Job Summary

We are seeking a Senior Insurance Risk Manager to join our Retail Operations team at Empire Life. This is an exciting opportunity for a bilingual candidate with 4+ years of experience in individual underwriting to lead and mentor junior and intermediate underwriters.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for assessing financial risk, providing sound risk decisions, and supporting the Sales & Marketing and Retail business line teams. They will also interact with reinsurance providers, consult with senior underwriters and medical directors, and participate as an active team member and leader.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess risk accurately to an approval limit of $2,000,000 - $3,000,000 for individual life and $1,000,000 for critical illness policies
  • Provide support to the Sales team in the management of the distribution relationship
  • Interact with reinsurance providers to spread risks on retention amounts that exceed the Empire Life retention limit
  • Consult with Senior Underwriters, Medical Directors, or the Underwriting Manager on any questionable situations
  • Participate as an active team member and lead assigned projects
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Bilingualism (English/French) is required
  • 4+ years work experience in individual underwriting, three of which has been at an intermediate level
  • Experience coaching/mentoring others
  • Comprehensive knowledge of medical and financial terminology
  • Well-developed analytical and problem resolution skills
  • Ability to be decisive and show consistently good judgment
  • Well-developed coaching and mentoring skills
  • Clear writing and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work within and apply decision methodologies
What We Offer

As a Senior Insurance Risk Manager at Empire Life, you can expect a competitive salary range of $90,000 - $130,000 per year, depending on experience, plus a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, and disability insurance, a generous health account, flexible work arrangements, four weeks annual vacation, a defined contribution pension plan, and more.
