Job Summary

The Smart Grid Engineer is responsible for driving the development and enhancement of technologies that support the efficient operation of Hydro Ottawa's distribution grid. This includes evaluating and supporting the development of new technologies, methodologies, and business processes to maximize the return on investment of distribution assets.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement solutions to enhance the use of Grid Technology systems and applications
  • Provide technical support to Grid Technology Support, stations, and distribution field staff
  • Evaluate and manage new Grid Technology projects
  • Create analysis workflows and associated business processes for customer departments
  • Assist in setting strategic direction for Grid Technology systems and applications
  • Participate in the development of Hydro Ottawa's smart grid roadmap
  • Support the development and use of data analytics to improve grid efficiency and maximize distribution asset life
  • Collaborate with other technology teams to enhance system and application functionality, availability, and security
  • Prepare budget briefs for projects and participate in overall budget and business planning processes
  • Provide input into system planning and distribution system standards and technology standards
  • Evaluate new technology, software, and equipment
  • Assist with managing and coordinating the successful completion of special projects as required
Requirements
  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering from an accredited university
  • Professional Engineer, licensed or able to be licensed in the province of Ontario
  • Strong computer skills; proficient in the use of office productivity and collaboration tools, preferably G Suite
  • Experience in an electric utility engineering environment considered an asset
  • Project Management and/or PMP Certification considered an asset
  • Experience with advanced grid applications (SCADA, ADMS, OMS, GIS) considered an asset
  • Knowledge of Fibre Optic communications technology (including planning and management) considered an asset
  • Knowledge of wireless communications technology (LTE, fixed point-to-point, point-to-multipoint) considered an asset
  • English essential, both oral and written; Bilingual (French/English) considered an asset
