Job Summary:

The CNC Machinist is responsible for operating one or more CNC machines to manufacture large precision-machined components with tolerances less than 0.0005". The successful candidate will work in a team environment, prioritizing safety and quality while meeting production and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate CNC machines, including four and five-axis mills, lathes, and mill-turn equipment, to manufacture precision-machined components.
  • Design and machine complex tooling and fixtures as necessary.
  • Collaborate with CNC programmers and engineers to establish key dimensions and ensure process capability.
  • Adjust programs and reprogram parts according to approved production control records.
  • Set up, troubleshoot, and operate CNC machines, using vises, fixtures, chucks, and other equipment.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings to set up parts correctly and ensure conformity and cycle time requirements.
  • Transfer CNC programs between CNC equipment.
  • Monitor tool life management and implement it across the cell and machines with automated systems.
  • Work with manufacturing engineering and programming to prove out programs, lock them out, and standardize them according to established procedures.
  • Enhance and follow approved work instructions and drawings provided.
  • Strive to achieve 100% first-time throughput on setups and expedited through the quality control department.
  • Follow manufacturing control systems and complete sign-offs as required.
  • Perform basic machine adjustments, if necessary.
  • Set tools according to tooling set sheets.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings to verify machined parts.
  • Complete production control records to indicate process deficiencies or make continuous improvement recommendations.
  • Follow tooling life replacement program.
  • Visually or mechanically inspect parts for defects and record results, notifying the lead or supervisor as appropriate.
  • Comfortably use various types of micrometers and calipers, profilometers, height gauges, indicators, edge finders, thread gauges, pin gauges, and bore gauges with master rings for measuring and inspection.
  • Understand and meet or exceed production and quality standards, minimizing reject rates.
  • Follow approved work instructions and drawings provided.
  • Perform simple machine preventative maintenance functions, such as checking coolants, lubricants, and filters.
  • Keep machines and work areas clean, notifying the supervisor or maintenance when machine abnormalities occur.
  • Possess the ability to use the computer system for basic departmental transactions.
  • Safely move components using lifting devices such as overhead cranes, jib cranes, and fork-lifts.
Requirements:
  • Able to use a variety of BWXT machines and work on multiple BWXT parts to varying degrees of complexity.
  • Educational background in manufacturing or equivalent experience working on CNC machines.
  • CNC Machinist with a Certificate of Qualification is an asset.
  • 5+ years of experience running 4 and 5-axis CNC mills, multi-axis lathes, long lathes, and/or mill-turn machines.
  • Experience working in the aerospace, defense, or nuclear industry is a definite asset.
  • Able to read and interpret engineering component drawings, including a strong understanding of metrology and GD&T.
  • Demonstrated ability as an adaptable team player with strong communication and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong ability to work independently to complete assignments promptly while maintaining high standards required in our industry.
  • Experience using lifting devices (cranes and forklifts).
