Job Summary

This position is responsible for preparing and serving meals to residents and guests in the Seniors Health Centre at North York General Hospital. The successful candidate will work under the direction of the Food Services Supervisor to ensure that all food is prepared and served in accordance with legislative requirements and hospital policies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and serve meals to residents and guests in accordance with therapeutic diets and planned menus.
  • Review menus before preparation and make substitutions as necessary in consultation with the Food Service Supervisor.
  • Ensure the use of proper food handling techniques and maintain a clean and safe kitchen environment.
  • Communicate effectively with residents and their families to ensure their needs are met.
  • Assist with menu planning and preparation, and participate in the development of new recipes and menus.
  • Work safely in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and follow all hospital policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Red Seal Cook Certificate
  • Public Health Food Handlers Certificate
  • Successful completion of a minimum 1 year program in Food Preparation/Chef Training or Culinary Arts from an Accredited College and/or must hold a current Assistant Cook Certificate issued by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities;
  • Experience in large quantity food preparation, preferably in a healthcare or long-term care setting
  • Ability to read, write and accurately follow written and verbal instructions
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to operate institutional cooking equipment
  • Well-organized and able to work independently
  • Demonstrated creative flair for menu planning, food preparation and presentation
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Food Premises Regulation, Food Safety Code of Practice and Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating
  • Working knowledge of special and therapeutic diets

Working at North York General Hospital means being part of a dynamic team of healthcare providers, staff, and volunteers in one of Canada's leading hospitals. This is a Part-Time Regular position, 8 hours shifts, days and evening shifts, including weekends in the Food Services Department of Seniors' Health Centre. We offer a highly competitive total compensation package which includes pay in lieu of benefits, vacation pay and the opportunity to join the Hospital Pension Plan.
