Aboriginal Court Worker

About the Role:
Meadow Lake Tribal Council (MLTC) is seeking a dedicated and culturally sensitive individual to fill the position of Aboriginal Court Worker. This full-time, 1-year term role is based out of the Meadow Lake office and focuses on facilitating access to justice for MLTC First Nation membership involved in the criminal justice system.
Key Responsibilities:
- Identify individuals requiring services with an emphasis on early intervention.
- Interview clients to collect reporting information, explain charges, and provide general information on legal rights and responsibilities.
- Speak with Crown to obtain Crown position on sentencing and provide information regarding the accused.
- Prepare clients for court appearances, assist in obtaining legal counsel, and explain procedures.
- Liaise with agencies that can assist the accused, including RCMP and defense counsel.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Combination of relevant education and experience.
- Preferred: Certificate, Diploma, or Degree from an accredited Justice-related program.
- Excellent organizational, decision-making, and professional judgment skills.
- Excellent communication, interviewing, and presentation skills.
- Intermediate to advanced computer skills.
- Ability to speak Cree/Dene language is a definite asset.
- Knowledge of and sensitivity towards Aboriginal cultures is also an asset.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and ability to travel extensively.

MLTC was created by nine First Nations in north-west Saskatchewan with constitutionally recognized Aboriginal rights and Treaty Rights under Treaties #6, #8, and #10. The primary purpose of MLTC is to serve these First Nations in their aspirations for cultural, economic, and political autonomy.
