Drive Profitable Growth as a Senior Underwriter/Underwriting Specialist

Aviva Canada Inc. is seeking a seasoned Senior Underwriter/Underwriting Specialist to join our Aviva Business commercial insurance business unit. This exciting opportunity is part of our Ontario Nationals Commercial Insurance Branch, where you will play a key role in driving profitable growth through quality underwriting with a middle market commercial focus.

As a Senior Underwriter/Underwriting Specialist, you will be accountable for collaborating with internal partners to identify new business opportunities and providing superior technical expertise to brokers and customers to price the risk appropriately. You will also provide mentorship and guidance to more junior underwriters, leveraging your expertise to drive business growth and profitability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Qualify and underwrite new and renewal Mid-Market Property & Casualty accounts, ensuring top-line growth and bottom-line profitability.
  • Develop and maintain internal and external relationships to deliver exceptional broker and customer service.
  • Act as a point of escalation for more junior underwriters, authorizing risks within established authority levels.
  • Maintain the quality and profitability of the Middle Market portfolio, referring risks outside established authority levels to the appropriate resource.
  • Contribute to market research and analysis, participating in business cases for pricing, coverage, and product improvements.
  • Help identify areas of concern regarding loss ratios, risk trends, or discrepancies, applying remediation strategies as needed.
  • Build knowledge of Information Systems/Programs within Commercial Insurance.
  • Participate in Quality Reviews and audits as required.
  • Maintain knowledge of industry trends, developments, and regulatory changes, contributing as a subject matter expert for branch and/or Middle Market learning and development.

Requirements:

  • 7+ years' experience in commercial Insurance underwriting.
  • Post-secondary education (Business or related discipline) or equivalent practical experience, CIP/FCIP preferred.
  • Expert knowledge of underwriting, pricing, and product in key segments, i.e., Wholesaling, Manufacturing, and/or Contractors.
  • Strong understanding of underwriting philosophy, policy contracts, rating programs, risk information sources, underwriting/technical manual information, statutory constraints, and computer workflow procedures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, RTM, Commercial systems, and other related systems.
  • Ability to interact professionally with brokers, customers, and internal partners to develop long-term relationships.
  • Self-motivation and proactive pursuit of potential business opportunities with brokers and customers.
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills, high degree of professionalism, and a solutions and service orientation.
