At The University of British Columbia, we are seeking a highly skilled Plumber Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our maintenance and repair crew, you will be responsible for performing skilled plumbing work in the maintenance, repair, and renovation of gas, air, water, and waste disposal systems throughout the university.

Job Summary

The successful candidate will have a trade certification to journeyperson level as a plumber, valid BC Gas Fitter B License with electrical endorsement for low voltage, BC Cross Connection Control certificate, and a Valid BC Drivers Licence. A minimum of 5 years of related experience is required, along with strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Ability to interpret drawings and specifications, sketches of work required, and maintenance manuals is essential.

You will be working under the general supervision of the Head/Sub-Head Tradesperson, receiving specific instructions only on unusual problems, and developing appropriate work procedures. Plumbers monitor and check the work of apprentice(s) and labourers as needed. This role requires excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work independently and within a team environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain, repair, and renovate gas, air, water, and waste disposal systems, including interior and exterior water mains and drainage systems.
  • Perform maintenance, repair, and renovation work such as maintaining plumbing fixtures, backflow prevention devices, gas, air, water, fire protection systems, and waste disposal systems.
  • Handle low-risk asbestos or other hazardous insulation materials following UBC policy and procedures.
  • Carry out repairs on machinery and equipment, inspecting tests, diagnosing defects in equipment, taking remedial action as required or recommending solutions to the Head/Sub-Head Tradesperson verbally or written.
  • Prepare cost estimates for jobs and order required materials.
  • Work from oral and written instructions, work orders, and drawings.
  • Assemble parts, equipment, fittings, and join them by soldering, brazing, gluing, screwing, calking, bolting, and other methods.
  • Work in a correct and safe manner, adhering to all safety standards, practices, procedures, and ensuring personal protective equipment is worn where required.
  • Respond to service requests and emergencies during normal working hours and after working hours in a safe and effective manner.
Salary Information

This position comes with a salary range of approximately $78,740 - $87,258 CAD per year, based on relevant experience. Please note that this is an estimate and actual salaries may vary based on individual circumstances.
