Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and qualified research assistant to join our team at the Geological Survey of Canada. The successful candidate will be working on a research project focused on the characterization and quantification of ground ice in Nunavut's Kivalliq region.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct field research in remote areas, including sampling and analysis of frozen active layer/near-surface permafrost cores.
  • Develop and implement laboratory methods for geotechnical and geochemical analysis of permafrost samples.
  • Collaborate with research directors and colleagues to write and publish research results and interpretations in open file reports and peer-reviewed papers.
  • Present research findings at scientific conferences.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in Geography or Earth Sciences from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Knowledge of physical geography of cold regions and one of the following: geographic information systems (GIS), hydrology, Quaternary Paleogeography and geomorphology.
  • Ability to work in the field in remote areas, work alone and in a team, and communicate effectively with team members and academic and governmental partners.
  • Reliability Status security clearance.
  • Registration in the University of Ottawa's MSc program in geography (geography, environment and geomatics department).
Working Environment

The student hired under this Research Affiliate Program will undertake their MSc project within the department of geography, environment and geomatics at the University of Ottawa. The project is expected to start in October 2024.
