Job Title: Transportation Safety Officer

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Transportation Safety Officer to join our team at the Toronto Catholic District School Board. As a key member of our Transportation department, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe delivery of student transportation services.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Administer and coordinate the safe delivery of student transportation services
  • Provide support to vendors and schools in the oversight and application of consortium safety programs
  • Monitor carrier operations and routes through GPS, on-site visits, and other related destinations
  • Utilize transportation software to identify issues, generate reports, and address safety-related concerns
  • Work with Operations and Planning team members to identify safe school bus locations
  • Perform audits of school bus operators to ensure compliance with necessary requirements
  • Audit bus routes to ensure drivers follow proper routes and monitor evacuation simulations and compliance with safety policies
  • Communicate consortium requirements regarding HTA, OHSA, and Municipal standards with carriers
  • Disseminate safety information to bus operators, staff, and other relevant stakeholders
  • Provide statistical reports on school bus operator accidents and incidents and monitor school bus operator compliance to safety protocols
  • Prepare and advise on school travel-related issues, including safe departure plans and organizational issues related to school bus service
  • Attend D250 Committee meetings and provide updates to the Toronto Student Transportation Group/Committee
  • Prepare, monitor, report, package, and purchase supplies for the Purple Equals Parent program
  • Monitor safety recognition programs and attend award banquets and other programs as required
  • Prepare instructional material and/or facilitate training of all staff and students on safety programs as required
Requirements:
  • Minimum 2-year Community College Diploma in Health and Safety or related field of study, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum two (2) years safety experience, preferably in the transportation industry
  • In-depth knowledge of the Highway Traffic Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and D250 standards
  • Ability to work well with computer applications/software such as MS Office and the Consortium routing software
  • Strong verbal and written communications and interpersonal skills
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and car for travel as required within the Greater Toronto Area (eligibility for mileage reimbursement)
  • Knowledge of the Environmental Protection Act, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Acts an asset
