We are seeking a skilled Laboratory and X-Ray Technologist to join our team at the Provincial Laboratory Medicine Services (PLMS) in Whistler, BC.

Job Summary:

The Laboratory and X-Ray Technologist performs technical work involved in laboratory and x-ray test procedures, evaluates and verifies laboratory results, and participates in quality assurance and quality control. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of laboratory procedures and technical competence to perform tests used in the assigned section of the laboratory.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform daily routine duties in both Lab and X-ray departments as required.
  • Work on hematology, coagulation, and chemistry benches.
  • Perform daily quality control, as appropriate.
  • Run patient samples and report results.
  • Receive blood components and products.
  • Assign and dispense uncross-matched red cells, albumin, RHIG, IVIG, plasma, and cross-matched red cells.
  • Transport blood components and products.
  • Quarantine and discard blood products.
  • Polling/reconstitution of purified plasma products (such as PCC, fibrinogen).
  • Maintain film library.
  • Prepare films for physicians and radiologists by retrieving relevant previous films and information and completing all documentation for each case.
  • Perform general x-ray procedures in the department and on the floor.
  • Perform inpatient and outpatient phlebotomies.
  • Perform, document, and monitor internal and external quality control.
  • Perform clerical functions such as participating in inventory control, keeping daily statistics, maintaining files, referring x-ray films to appropriate physicians, referring specimens to other labs, answering phone calls, booking procedures, referencing lab reports including Transfusion Medicine reports.
  • Participate in internal and external quality assurance programs.
  • Perform equipment maintenance and troubleshooting; documentation work performed.
  • Participate in the orientation of new employees, including conducting in-services when required.
  • Provide "on-call" services, as appropriate.
  • Carry out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements. Immediately report unsafe situations by notifying supervisor or other appropriate personnel.
Requirements:
  • Graduation from a recognized Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technology Program.
  • Eligible for registration with a provincial licensing body.
  • Completion of the NAIT TRAM 101 Course, minimum one (1) year recent, related experience or program/curriculum-based instruction in transfusion medicine or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Demonstrated recent working knowledge of the assigned section or sections.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory procedures, and technical competence to perform tests used in the assigned section of the laboratory, including quality control and safety.
  • Basic awareness of research process.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure in a constantly changing environment.
  • Basic knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in client care using point of care instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment and software, including techniques appropriate to the designated area of the laboratory.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Commitment to develop knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments found in the foundational documents – including Truth & Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study – and how they intersect across the health care system.
