We are seeking a highly skilled Specialist Materials Engineer to join our team at Intact Financial Corporation. As a Specialist Materials Engineer, you will play a critical role in helping us understand and mitigate the risks associated with material failures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the claims team in quickly and efficiently resolving claims related to equipment, product, and chemical contamination failures.
  • Conduct mandates for internal and external experts, working collaboratively with evaluators and buildings teams.
  • Have a strong understanding of material characterization and the principles of fractography.
  • Identify the causal element of failure while eliminating other possible causes through a process of investigation and scientific research, recreating the sequence of events leading to the failure and validating these steps with up-to-date scientific knowledge.
  • Validate hypotheses and test scenarios under study, applying the scientific method to identify the causes of failures.
  • Travel to the site of a failure to document the location and collect relevant samples.
  • Manage samples and related tasks in the laboratory.
  • Meet with insured parties and thoroughly understand the circumstances surrounding their claim.
  • Document the location and express your opinion on the probable cause of damage.
  • Record your opinion in writing and intervene to contribute to the resolution of ongoing claims by providing technical expertise.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Quebec and across Canada.
  • You may also be called to testify in court to share your expert opinion.

What You'll Bring

  • A degree in chemical engineering, materials science, or chemistry, or a combination of studies and relevant experience.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience in failure or material characterization.
  • Knowledge of various material characterization tools (electron and optical microscopy, infrared spectroscopy).
  • A fundamental understanding of corrosion mechanisms.
  • Experience in the insurance industry and as an expert witness will be considered a significant asset.
  • Membership in a professional order related to the specific field.
  • Excellent communication and technical concept explanation skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Innovation and adaptability capabilities.
  • Ability to collaborate with the team or work independently to achieve objectives.
  • Bilingualism (French and English).
