Job Description:

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Orthoptist to join our multidisciplinary team in the Department of Ophthalmology. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing ocular examinations, interpreting test results, and developing treatment plans for patients with disorders of the visual system and/or eye motility.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpretation and Evaluation: Interpret test results, evaluate patient data, and communicate findings to referring physicians.
  • Ocular Examinations: Conduct comprehensive ocular examinations, including history taking, visual acuity testing, lensometry, extra-ocular muscle assessment, sensory testing, pupil assessment, applanation tonometry, and refraction.
  • Patient Management: Independently assess patients and assist in managing their care in the Orthoptic Clinics.
  • Consultation and Education: Consult with referring physicians regarding medical and/or surgical treatment options and educate patients and families on their specific ocular disorders.
  • Contact Lens Therapy: Provide contact lens therapy as prescribed by ophthalmologists.
  • Medication Knowledge: Be knowledgeable about common ophthalmic medications, including their types, strengths, actions, and potential complications.
  • Resident Support: Provide support for the Ophthalmology Resident Training Program, Kingston Ophthalmic Training Center, Medical Students, and other learners as needed.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Certified Orthoptist and graduate of an accredited Orthoptic Program.
  • Member or eligibility for membership of the Canadian Orthoptic Council.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BCLS) certification.
  • Recent related work experience.
  • Proven good attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively with children and developmentally delayed patients and their families.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Able to work in a physically and mentally demanding environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to practice independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated high clinical standards and commitment to ongoing education.
  • Ability to attend work regularly.
  • Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.

Physical Requirements:

The incumbent will be required to meet the physical demands associated with the area of work.
