Job Title: Legal Counsel

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Legal Counsel to join our team at the University of Ottawa Community Legal Clinic. As a key member of our faculty, you will play a vital role in providing legal education and supervision to law students, while also representing the clinic and its clients in court and administrative tribunals.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise and manage law students working in the clinic, providing ongoing education and training on poverty law, court conduct, and file management.
  • Represent the clinic and its clients in appearances before courts and administrative tribunals, drafting legal pleadings and appearing at hearings as required.
  • Advocate on behalf of the clinic and its clientele in all exchanges with courts, tribunals, and third parties.
  • Supervise students in accordance with professional standards as set by the Law Society of Ontario, training and mentoring them on all necessary aspects of law and legal research.
  • Recruit, select, and interview students for full-time summer employment.
  • Design and deliver legal aid courses each academic year, contributing to the academic programming of the Common Law Section and the Community Legal Clinic.
  • Develop and implement innovative clinic pedagogical methods in supervising and advising law students at the Clinic.
  • Remain current on legislation and legislative changes affecting the clinic and its clients, providing legal advice on operational, compliance, and policy responses.
Requirements:
  • Degree in law (LL.B. or J.D.) and member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario.
  • ~1 year experience as a practicing lawyer, preferably in the area of poverty law or in a clinical legal setting.
  • ~Bilingualism – French and English (spoken and written).
  • ~Experience working with law students and diverse clientele.
  • ~Experience and knowledge in clinical legal pedagogy and client-centered lawyering.
  • ~Ability to produce high-quality work under pressure while meeting strict deadlines.
