We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Linux Engineer to join our team at Pomeroy in Toronto, ON. This is a 6-month contract with potential to extend.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the stability, security, and scalability of Linux-based systems in the banking industry. They will provide expert technical leadership and collaborate with IT, cybersecurity, and business teams to design and maintain secure, high-performance Linux infrastructure critical to supporting banking operations and services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Linux Infrastructure Leadership:
    • Design, implement, and maintain enterprise-level Linux systems that meet the high-security and high-availability requirements of the banking industry.
    • Serve as the go-to expert for all Linux-related matters, ensuring systems are optimized for performance, stability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Compliance & Security:
    • Lead efforts to harden Linux systems against security vulnerabilities, ensuring adherence to financial industry standards such as PCI DSS, SOX, and GDPR.
    • Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to implement firewalls, SELinux, encryption, and other security controls.
    • Ensure compliance with industry regulations and internal audit requirements through proactive system monitoring and reporting.
  • Disaster Recovery & High Availability:
    • Architect and implement disaster recovery solutions and business continuity plans for Linux systems, ensuring minimal downtime and quick recovery in case of an incident.
    • Design and manage failover, load balancing, and clustering strategies to support mission-critical financial systems.
  • Automation & Efficiency:
    • Develop automation scripts (using Bash, Python, etc.) and configuration management tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef) to streamline system administration and deployment.
    • Automate repetitive tasks to improve system efficiency and reduce the risk of manual errors, especially in highly regulated environments.
  • Advanced Troubleshooting & Incident Response:
    • Provide tier-3 support for complex Linux system issues, ensuring timely resolution of incidents that impact banking operations.
    • Conduct root cause analysis and implement preventive measures to avoid future disruptions.
  • Cloud Integration & Virtualization:
    • Lead the migration and management of Linux systems in hybrid cloud environments (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) tailored to banking workloads and security requirements.
    • Optimize virtualized environments using VMware, KVM, or other virtualization platforms while ensuring compliance with banking industry standards.
  • Collaboration & Cross-functional Teamwork:
    • Work closely with application development, database, and cybersecurity teams to ensure seamless integration and operation of banking systems.
    • Act as a liaison between IT infrastructure and business units to translate technical requirements into business solutions.
  • Mentorship & Leadership:
    • Mentor junior engineers, promoting knowledge sharing and best practices within the Linux team.
    • Lead training sessions and workshops to build the technical skills of IT staff, focusing on regulatory compliance and system security in the financial sector.
  • Documentation & Regulatory Audits:
    • Maintain thorough and up-to-date documentation on system configurations, processes, and changes to facilitate audits and ensure transparency in system management.
    • Assist in internal and external regulatory audits by providing detailed reports on Linux system security and performance.
  • Innovation & Continuous Improvement:
    • Research and evaluate new Linux technologies and tools to enhance system performance, security, and compliance in the banking industry.
    • Recommend and implement innovative solutions to support evolving banking services, such as mobile banking and secure transaction processing.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience: 8+ years of experience in Linux engineering, with 3+ years of experience in the banking or financial services industry, particularly with high-security environments.
Technical Skills
  • Deep expertise in Linux distributions (e.g., Red Hat, CentOS, Ubuntu) in high-availability, high-security environments.
  • Strong experience with automation tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Chef) and scripting languages (Bash, Python).
  • Advanced knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and their compliance with banking regulations.
  • Expertise in regulatory frameworks (PCI DSS, SOX, GDPR) and security standards (firewalls, SELinux, encryption, multi-factor authentication).
  • Experience with disaster recovery planning, high availability architecture, and system monitoring.
  • Familiarity with database management systems (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle) in a Linux environment.
  • Hands-on experience with virtualization technologies (VMware, KVM) and containerization tools (Docker, Kubernetes).
Soft Skills
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, particularly in troubleshooting mission-critical systems.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Leadership and mentoring skills to guide junior engineers and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong organizational skills with a focus on regulatory compliance, documentation, and audit readiness.

Pay: $50.00-$56.00 per hour
