Job Description

Job Summary:

Barr Engineering Co. is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented intern to join our environmental management team in Calgary. As an environmental engineer intern, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of fieldwork and office-based tasks, gaining a holistic view of the environmental consulting business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support environmental sampling programs, including soil, surface water, groundwater, and air sampling
  • Assist with air emissions monitoring and climate station maintenance and support
  • Conduct data management and evaluate emissions and air-quality data
  • Review regulations and facility information relevant to projects
  • Assist with the preparation of reports, including writing technical evaluations and preparing data summary tables and spreadsheets

Requirements:

  • University enrollment with a major in chemical, mechanical, or environmental engineering, environmental science, or a related scientific discipline
  • Completion of six courses in engineering, environmental sciences, or related subjects
  • GPA of 3.2/4.0 or higher
  • On-going enrollment in one of the programs listed above with at least one semester to go after the internship
  • Availability to work 40+ hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to travel to locations for up to two weeks at a time
  • Availability to work for 3–4 months during the summer
  • Willingness to work overtime if field programs require
  • Familiarity with computers, including Microsoft Office programs
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills
  • Ability to self-motivate
  • Conscientiousness concerning the accuracy, appropriateness, and timeliness of results
  • Thorough, organized, detail-oriented approach, with ability to work within a team
  • Flexible working style and willingness to modify personal schedules as required to meet project deadlines and/or client needs
  • Legal authorization to work in Canada without the need for sponsorship from Barr Engineering Co.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous relevant internship experience or other related experience

Work Environment:

This position requires presence in a Barr Engineering Co. office Monday-Friday from 8AM - 5PM local time. Some project work may require work on locations with rough terrain, operating industrial facilities, remote locations, and potentially working on tall structures and near industrial equipment. Safety training and drug testing will be required prior to being given work assignments on these sites.
