About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Industrial Approvals Engineer to join our team at the Government of Alberta. As an Industrial Approvals Engineer, you will play a critical role in assessing the environmental impacts of industrial operations in Alberta and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical review of approval applications and registration submissions to assess the environmental impact of industrial activities.
  • Coordinate input from internal and external specialists to determine the potential impacts on various environmental media.
  • Research scientific literature and practices to develop approval standards for releases with no existing Alberta standards or guidelines.
  • Liaise with applicants, stakeholders, and public interest groups to facilitate issue discussion and resolution.
  • Write enforceable approvals reflecting the requirements based on the assessment of all relevant environmental issues.
  • Review monitoring data and conduct facility inspections to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Meet with industry officials to influence strategies and provide assistance for improvement of their environmental performance.
  • Negotiate with industries to develop innovative, environmentally acceptable, and cost-effective options for resolution of identified problems.
  • Participate on the Industrial Approvals Team by providing input on various air, water, waste, and engineering issues.
  • Confirm information submitted by industry consultants is relevant, accurate, and supported by current scientific knowledge.
  • Prepare recommendations, draft action requests, and briefing notes for management review.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil, Chemical, Mechanical, or Environmental Engineering.
  • Minimum 5 years of related work experience.
  • Eligibility for membership with APEGA as a Professional Engineer.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act.
  • Experience in various industrial settings, including chemical manufacturing, hazardous waste management, landfills, and power plants.
  • Additional related education considered in lieu of experience on a one-for-one basis.
