We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Underwriting Director to join our team at Gen Re. As a key member of our Life and Health operations, you will be responsible for applying sound underwriting judgment in evaluating facultative risks referred by client companies.
Key Responsibilities- Provide expert underwriting judgment on all facultative cases, with a focus on high net worth business, while holding signing authority up to $20M.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with clients through daily communication and by visiting them at their home offices.
- Provide technical support, informed opinions, and general counsel as a trusted partner and underwriting SME.
- Support Actuarial, Administrative, and Marketing departments and work on ad hoc inter-departmental projects.
- Contribute to initiatives that improve operational efficiencies, mitigate enterprise-wide risk, and ensure that the standards of underwriting and auditing policies are met.
- Represent the Branch at national and regional underwriting meetings, conferences, and industry workshops.
- Stay up-to-date with evolving underwriting practices and share valuable learnings with the Chief Underwriting Officer and senior leadership team.
- Document and present the results of client visits to the senior leadership team as necessary.
- Establish, promote, and develop effective business relationships with internal colleagues.
- Support the review of contestable claims when directed.
- University-level education in a business, finance, or economics-related discipline, combined with at least 10 years of underwriting experience with expertise in life underwriting and preferably with both critical illness and disability underwriting.
- FLMI, AALU, or FALU designation is desirable, or underway, or a commitment to immediately undertake skills and leadership training and accreditation.
- Proven track record in managing underwriting and client management responsibilities effectively, ensuring the highest quality of performance and professional service.
- Refined verbal and written communication skills with the ability to articulate complex information to internal and external stakeholders in a clear, concise, and focused manner.
- A self-sufficient and resourceful underwriting professional who demonstrates flexibility, efficient time management skills, and the ability to prioritize.
- Adheres to internal procedures and policies and performs all duties with the goal of maximizing shareholder value.
- Acts as a role model within and outside the organization and espouses its goals and values, promoting best practices and actively seeking ideas and diverse perspectives.
- Holds high standards of integrity, loyalty, and commitment and is adept in earning the trust and confidence of colleagues and clients.
- Fluency in English is a requirement. Fluency in French is an asset.
