About the Role

We are seeking a reliable and skilled Highway Maintenance Operator to join our team at Alberta Highway Services Ltd. in Calgary, Alberta. As a key member of our maintenance crew, you will be responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient operation of our roadways, including snow and ice control, summer grass and drainage maintenance, surface repairs, and bridge maintenance.

Main Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain heavy equipment, including snowplows, towplows, loaders, graders, and tandem axle gravel trucks.
  • Perform physical labor, including setting up traffic accommodations, flagging, and installing signs, guardrails, and delineators.
  • Participate in and apply AHSL safety practices to all aspects of work, including wearing personal protective equipment.
  • Prepare for work by arriving fit for duty, with adequate time ahead of shift, and ready for the work day with everything needed on hand.
  • Maintain AHSL equipment and vehicles, including clearing and verifying vehicles after use, performing standard upkeep, and notifying supervisors of anomalies.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED is an asset.
  • A valid driver's license (Class 3 or 1 with Air Brakes) with a recent 5-year abstract and reliable transportation.
  • Previous experience in heavy equipment operation is an asset.
  • Road maintenance construction experience is considered an asset.
  • Ability to work long shifts up to 12 hours, including night shifts, and be on call for winter activities.
  • Ability to work in uncertain outdoor conditions and work overtime hours when required.
  • Willingness to work physically in a team environment and assist coworkers with other duties as needed.
  • Ability to write, read, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Experience with safety regulations and safe practices.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment fit and drug/alcohol testing.
