Job Title: Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer at Tesla, you will be responsible for designing cutting-edge machinery used across the company to optimize the factory of the future. You will work with cross-functional teams to conceptualize and design next-generation manufacturing equipment, contributing to the development of new and innovative manufacturing processes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to engineering efforts for the conceptualization and design of next-generation manufacturing equipment
  • Develop and implement new manufacturing processes from proof of concept to full-scale production
  • Improve equipment effectiveness, manufacturing tolerance, stability, automation, and intelligence
  • Prepare 3D CAD models, detailed drawings with GD&T for manufacturing and assembly, mechanical BOMs, safety and maintenance documentation
  • Prepare 3D animation or motion study for complex designs
  • Perform FEA analysis on intricate designs, with a strong understanding of force/stress analysis
  • Create detailed Manufacturing Instructions to document new processes
  • Provide mechanical engineering support to fabrication, assembly, project management, and production teams to troubleshoot and resolve design issues and implement enhancements to optimize machine performance
Requirements:
  • 5+ years of experience as a hands-on mechanical/manufacturing/design engineer/designer working on mechanical and/or electromechanical systems
  • Prior experience in high-volume manufacturing or a relevant engineering field is valued
  • Proficiency in designing mechanical equipment, fixtures, layouts, and tooling in 2D and 3D CAD (SolidWorks & AutoCAD preferred)
  • Proficiency in creating detailed drawings from solid models for various fabrication and assembly techniques (CNC/manual machining, welding, sheet metal forming, 3D printing, press fit, fasteners)
  • Exposure and knowledge of a wide variety of test and automation systems & tools, production machinery, industrial sensors, data acquisition and I/O devices
  • Analytical and statistical analysis skills to solve design problems
  • Knowledge of GD&T, basic computational design, and FEA is an asset
  • Experience in DOE, conducting experiments, prototype building, and hands-on experience
  • Experience of new equipment installations and new product startups
  • Experience writing production documentation: SOPs, checklists, flow diagrams
