Job Summary:

The Shelter Worker is responsible for providing a safe and secure environment for residents and visitors at The Salvation Army. This role requires a unionized position with a flexible, non-routine schedule.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the activities of clients/residents and maintain availability for personal, practical, and morale support.
  • Oversee Café Operations with Family Services Worker and provide training/supervision to Café volunteers.
  • Accurately record day-to-day happenings using appropriate methods and maintain logbooks.
  • Monitor Services Lists, including Case Planning, Outreach, Nurse, and Counseling.
  • Liaise with referral sources and other external agencies as needed.
  • Coordinate client care relating to security issues, including bed checks and room/personal searches.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

The successful applicant will hold/have:

  • Completion of High School plus post-secondary diploma or certificate.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a personal vehicle for business purposes.
  • Certificate in First Aid and CPR Training.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training.

Experience:

More than three months but less than one year of prior related experience, including experience with frontline work in a social services setting.

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Willingness to adhere to the mission and values of The Salvation Army.
  • Ability to provide training and support to volunteers.
  • High standards of integrity, judgment, and confidentiality.
  • Strong decision-making and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency on standard computer programs and general office equipment.

PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

  • General office skills and experience would be considered an asset.
  • Volunteer experience would be an asset.
