Job Summary:

The Yard Operator plays a vital role in the operational needs of our organization. This position requires a broad skill set, including knowledge of scrap grading and the ability to learn. The successful candidate will assist in various aspects of daily operations, such as scrap inspection, ferrous and non-ferrous purchasing, mobile equipment operation, and general maintenance duties.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Follow established safety, environmental, and routine procedures specific to the yard.
  • Operate material handling equipment, such as cranes and loaders, to accomplish daily tasks.
  • Communicate regularly with the scale, supervisor, coworkers, and customers regarding material quality and shipping requirements.
  • Inspect and verify scrap for grade and quality, identifying deductions and downgrades.
  • Ensure all incoming scrap is scanned for radiation and quarantined if necessary.
  • Perform daily Routine Equipment Care (REC) and document results.
  • Provide excellent customer service and promote the core values of Gerdau.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Assist in monthly inventory counts and maintenance personnel with equipment repairs.
  • Operate the Baler Operation and assist in non-ferrous processing.
  • Stage and remove material for torching with a material handler.
  • Contribute to problem-solving and provide input as required.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Desire to enhance skills and knowledge to develop as a Gerdau employee.
  • Promote and practice the core values of Gerdau.
  • High School Education at a minimum.
