Job Summary

The Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre is seeking highly motivated and dedicated students to participate in our Enhanced Extern Program. As a Clinical Extern, you will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic and interprofessional environment, providing patient-centered care under the supervision of a registered healthcare professional.

Key Responsibilities
  • Practice under the direct and/or indirect supervision of a registered healthcare professional in a manner consistent with the organization's Mission, Vision, and Values.
  • Carry out or assist with activities of daily living, including patient care activities and non-patient care activities, such as mobility assistance, provision of measures to ensure skin integrity, and activation, companionship, and social engagement.
  • Contribute to care planning and implementation of existing care plan interventions under the direction of the nurse.
  • Report changes in patient status or safety concerns to a supervising nurse and/or clinical extern supervisor.
Requirements
  • Must be enrolled in a recognized nursing, paramedic, undergraduate medical, respiratory therapy, occupational therapy, or physiotherapy program.
  • Must have a current certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Must have completed any orientation and mandatory training during onboarding.
  • Must demonstrate good academic standing with the enrolled program.
  • Must have evidence of successful learning experiences in recent clinical placements.
Working Conditions

The Clinical Extern will work in a variety of clinical areas, including Adult Mental Health, Cardiac Renal Unit, Cancer Palliative Unit, Emergency Department, Inpatient Medicine Units, Obstetrics, Paediatrics, and Surgical Inpatient Units. The hours of work will be rotating shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
