Directions Youth Services is a division of Family Services of Greater Vancouver, which has provided essential resources for children, families, and individuals in the Greater Vancouver community for over 90 years. We believe in the resilience of Vancouver's youth who are unhoused and street-involved. Our teams strive to create spaces and build connections with youth facing challenges related to street life, substance use, mental health concerns, disconnection from their communities, marginalization, and trauma.
Our Mission
We assist youth under the age of 25 to access the services they deserve to thrive. Our teams operate low-barrier spaces where all youth are welcome. Directions Youth Services Centre is BC's only 24/7/365 drop-in centre for youth and is committed to being a community leader in harm reduction work.
About the Opportunity
This in-person Sunday evening volunteer position supports the drop-in centre's Food Program Supervisor, helping prep and serve nightly meals, sorting food donations, cleaning the kitchen, and washing dishes. The volunteer will work with the Food Program staff to maintain a zero-waste environment and keep the kitchen clean, hygienic, and tidy at all times.
What You Bring
- Experience working with youth, preferably in support of youth who use substances, face mental health challenges, and/or are unhoused is an asset.
- Experience working in a kitchen, food service, or customer service environment is an asset.
- Lived experience is considered an asset.
- Current First Aid Certificate and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training is an asset.
Responsibilities
- Support the Food Program staff with meal preparation, inventory upkeep, kitchen organization, and pursuing a zero-waste environment.
- Building positive relationships with youth who access the drop-in centre, and being a positive, mature role model.
- Maintaining accurate attendance records of your volunteer hours, and reporting concerns to Food Program Supervisor.
- Help sort and store food donations.
- Adhere to all program and agency policies, procedures, and safety standards; including but not limited to confidentiality policy.
Requirements
- Successful completion of a criminal record check.
- Proof of Covid-19 vaccination status will be required.
