Environmental Specialist, Highway Maintenance Operations

LaPrairie Group of Companies is seeking an experienced professional to fill the role of Environmental Specialist, Highway Maintenance Operations & Infrastructure. As a key member of our team, you will play a crucial part in ensuring our environmental performance meets the highest standards.
About the Role- Provide environmental program support, overseeing operations' environmental performance and ensuring compliance with contractual and provincial environmental policies and regulations.
- Work in conjunction with the Health and Safety and QA/QC Team Leads and be required to travel out to inspect and audit various facilities and/or work sites within the assigned region.
- Administer environmental programs, provide expert guidance on environmental management, including direction in statistical reporting, hazard assessment & controls, incident investigation, and follow-up activities.
- Offer environmental advice and support for line managers and field supervisors.
- Collaborate with field operations supervision/management to ensure employee adherence to environmental policies.
- Promote a culture where incidents, hazards, and opportunities for improvement are reported, discussed, and addressed efficiently.
- Conduct risk assessments, prepare Environmental Management Plans (EMPs), and recommend strategies to minimize project risks.
- Maintain and update safe operational procedures (SOPs) addressing relevant environmental hazards and controls.
- Support compliance with Provincial and Federal Environmental legislation as it applies.
- Mentor employees on environmental matters, providing guidance at all levels on evolving provisions.
- Conduct regular site/facility inspections, draft reports/minutes tracking environmental deliverables and related follow-ups.
- Assist operational teams in implementing environmentally friendly strategies and develop internal processes.
- Lead in-house training sessions for managers and employees on general environmental issues, related risks, emergency response protocols, and best practices.
- Advise on specialist areas such as hazardous/substance control, noise, containment, and clean-up strategies.
- Participate actively in promoting compliance within LaPrairie Group's ISO 9001:2015 Quality Assurance System.
- A minimum of 5 years of relevant environmental experience/training.
- Industry certifications (e.g., NCSO designation), post-secondary education in environmental studies, or equivalent professional certifications (CECAB, etc.) considered assets.
- Familiarity with environmental practices within the Highway Maintenance, Public Works, Civil Construction sectors preferred.
- Excellent communication skills, oral and written, with ability to handle sensitive information professionally.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to travel regularly throughout the regions of operation.
