Senior Mechanical/Mechatronics Engineer

Ocado Logistics is seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical/Mechatronics Engineer to join our Grocery Pick Hardware Team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for designing and developing complex robotic systems, working closely with software and AI teams to ensure seamless integration.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and build structural and motion assemblies, including end effectors, robot supports, and dresspacks.
  • Validate designs through bench tests, ALT, FEA, and production trials.
  • Create assembly drawings in SolidWorks and manage bill of materials through our PLM system.
  • Develop accurate and concise assembly instructions and SOPs for installation, maintenance, and manufacturing teams.
  • Work in a cross-functional team developing technologies to be used in production.
  • Perform design reviews, promote and implement development best practices.
  • Identify improvements, engineering standards, and procedures, and promote best practices to ensure high-quality products.
  • Elevate the skill of the team through technical mentorship and foster a culture of mentorship within the team.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of experience as a mechanical engineer in a related industry.
  • Ability to iterate quickly and demonstrate new concepts through rapid prototypes of designs.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals and the ability to approach problems from first principles.
  • Experience modeling and creating part drawings for sheet metal parts, weldments, precision machined components, castings, and injection molded components with knowledge of DFMA principles.
  • Experience selecting, sizing, and designing for a range of actuator types, transmissions, pneumatic actuators, and linear and rotary bushings and bearings.
  • Proficient in the use and interpretation of cartesian and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing in drawings.
  • Expert in designing with SolidWorks or other major packages, including extensive knowledge of conducting FEA for a wide range of cases and materials.
  • Capable of leading a small group of engineers to ensure project deliverables are completed on time.
  • Conduct root cause analyses and mechanical forensic investigation.
  • Experience with designing systems that have reached production at scale, considering all relevant stakeholders.
  • Experience mentoring and guiding junior and intermediate-level engineers and interns, fostering a collaborative and inclusive team culture while promoting best practices.
  • Ability to travel internationally up to 10% of the time.

Bonus Qualifications:

  • Applicable skills in at least one of the following areas: end effector design, industrial automation, robotic work cells.
  • Pneumatic system experience, including valving and instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of safety systems for industrial machinery, such as ISO 12100 and ISO 10218.
  • Experience with analog electrical equipment, including specifying cables, connectors, panel layouts, and NFPA79.
  • Automated test fixture creation, including PLC programming experience.
  • Experience with sensor selection, integration, and signal conditioning.
  • Understanding of programming microcontrollers/processors for limited bench-top testing.
  • Hands-on experience commissioning a system.
  • Knowledge of thermal calculations and conducting thermal analyses.
