About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Heavy Duty Mechanic to join our team at Colas Western Canada Inc. as a Road Construction Specialist. As a key member of our Terus Construction team, you will be responsible for diagnosing, evaluating, repairing, and maintaining equipment and assets used in heavy/highway construction and construction material plants.

Main Responsibilities
  • Complete work as directed by the Shop Foreman/Lead Head.
  • Perform a variety of tasks involving manual labor in heavy/highway construction and construction material plants.
  • Maintain a wide range of equipment and troubleshoot malfunctions from a mechanical, electric, and electronic standpoint.
  • Operate several types of construction equipment to evaluate condition.
  • Maintain a clean job site, pick up all tools and equipment, and secure the job site each day to eliminate potential hazards.
  • Load and unload trucks and haul and hoist materials.
  • Operate metal cutting, machining, and welding equipment in the repair of mechanical equipment and fabrication of tools, jigs, and fixtures.
  • Weld, braze, solder, and cut steel, copper, cast aluminum, cast iron, stainless steel, and other metals and alloys, and perform emergency on-site or scheduled shop repair and metal work.
  • Design, fashion, and forge new tools, iron work, and metal parts, and modify existing equipment for special purposes.
  • Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed.
  • Attend Safety Meetings and meet training goals for the job role and advancement.
Requirements
  • Minimum four (4) years of experience working within a shop environment.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience working as a mechanic on construction equipment.
  • Minimum two (2) years of field experience.
  • Red Seal Certification. 4th year apprentice mechanic may apply.
  • Must be able to enter and work in LNG sites and Port of Prince Rupert.
  • Can work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Good computer skills in troubleshooting equipment software.
  • Must be a strong team player with a strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to travel the region to support other locations as needed.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
  • Willing to work in the field and in all weather conditions.
  • Willing to work overtime (may include weekends) during the busy season (April to October) and on call as necessary.
  • Ability to utilize hands and fingers to perform repair and maintenance tasks on construction equipment.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and reach with arms and hands throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50lb.
  • Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch as needed.
  • Ability to see clearly or with assistance via necessary correction.
  • The noise level on the shop floor and around equipment may be loud.

  • This is a safety-sensitive position; selected candidate must pass drug and alcohol testing as required.
Compensation

Minimum $47 per hour.
