Job Summary

As a Personal Support Worker with VON Canada, you will be responsible for providing companionship, personal care, and health maintenance services to clients in their homes or within the community. You will work with members of the Healthcare and Personal Support teams to meet the needs of clients in obtaining an optimal level of independence and well-being.

Key Responsibilities
  • Observe and evaluate clients' or families' homes, personal situations, and care plans to determine if any changes are required.
  • Contribute to the development of personal support care plans under the direction of the Personal Support Program Manager.
  • Implement changes to care plans under the guidance of the Manager for safety, liability, and financial reasons.
  • Report verbally to the immediate supervisor or Personal Support Program Manager any changes in clients' or families' personal support needs or home situations.
  • Perform personal support tasks reflecting clients' and families' needs, including light cleaning, meal preparation, and household safety monitoring.
  • Provide personal care as directed by the Personal Support Program Manager or immediate supervisor, including assistance with walking, climbing, or descending stairs, getting into and out of bed, eating, dressing, and other matters of personal hygiene.
  • Provide simple bedside care under the direction of a nurse.
  • Provide respite care to clients as required.
  • Support clients' families by providing childcare as required to allow for family relief.
  • Organize daily activities, setting priorities for personal support and other tasks under the direction of the Personal Support Program Manager or immediate supervisor.
  • Complete daily call checks and other forms as required to maintain the effective and efficient operation of personal and home support services.
  • Assess clients' patterns of communication and ability to relate.
  • Communicate with healthcare team members regarding clients' or families' homemaking, physical, and emotional needs and inform the immediate supervisor or Manager of any changes or concerns.
Requirements
  • High school diploma.
  • Secondary school education is preferred.
  • CCA Certification is required in Nova Scotia.
  • Must have a certificate in Home Support Worker (Level I, II, III), Personal Support Worker program, or Health Care Aide.
  • Must have a current Standard First Aid Certificate or CPR level C Certificate, if applicable to the work being performed.
  • Some household management experience and experience working with elderly or ill individuals or children.
Skills
  • Strong communication skills, both verbally and written.
  • Able to communicate effectively with clients and families in a clear and effective manner that demonstrates respect, empathy, and understanding.
  • Good assessment skills.
  • Awareness of community resources.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team or independently as required.
  • Able to take direction well.
  • Ability to adjust to working in different social and economic environments.
  • The capacity to adhere to strict confidentiality.
