Job Overview

The Steel Supervisor position at Seaspan offers a challenging and rewarding role for an experienced professional to lead the steel department trades workers. Reporting directly to the Manager Steel, you will work closely with operations, project managers, and chargehands to plan, execute, and prioritize tasks within the VDC Steel department.

About the Role

This is a full-time, permanent position that requires a strong leader to manage a team of skilled tradespeople. You will be responsible for ensuring all work is carried out in accordance with shipyard safety, quality, and environmental standards, policies, and procedures.

Main Responsibilities
  • Manage and oversee the daily activities of the steel department trades workers.
  • Plan and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines and ensure efficient production.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and protocols to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Develop and implement processes to improve productivity and quality.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve project goals.
  • Conduct performance management tasks, including disciplining trades employees and managing time cards and leave requests.
Required Skills and Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A minimum of 5 years of related trades work experience outside of any trade's apprenticeship or educational program.
  • A minimum of 3 years of previous supervisory experience in a heavy industrial environment, preferably in a unionized environment.
  • Proficient knowledge of trade responsibilities specific to heavy manufacturing (welding, metal fabrication, electrical, pipefitting, paint/sandblasting, mechanical, rigging).
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to empower others, lead change, and coordinate discipline when required.

Salary Information

The estimated salary range for this position is $115,000 - $127,000, depending on your skillset and experience. Your final base salary offer will be at the company's sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
