Job Overview:

Northwest Employment Works is seeking a highly skilled Education Specialist to join our team. As an Education Specialist, you will work collaboratively with various stakeholders to improve student literacy and numeracy achievement in First Nation communities.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and implement Student Achievement Division initiatives to improve student literacy and numeracy achievement.
  • Provide expertise, leadership, and support to build capacity within First Nation communities.
  • Work cooperatively with partners to build and provide information and clarification regarding Ministry of Education policies, programs, research, resources, and strategies.
  • Foster strong relationships with community members, schools, and other organizations to advance the goals of Northwest Employment Works.

Qualifications:

  • Member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers.
  • Teaching and leadership experience in Ontario or First Nations Secondary school and board setting.
  • Deep understanding of content knowledge for teaching mathematics and facilitated math-focused professional learning opportunities.
  • Effective literacy and language acquisition skills, including differentiated instruction and effective supports for English Language learners and students with special education needs.
  • Culturally responsive pedagogy, including deep understanding of First Nation, Metis, and Inuit histories, cultures, and perspectives.
  • Assessment for/as/of learning, pedagogical documentation, gap-closing, and personalized strategies.
  • Ability to travel to First Nation communities in small aircraft.
  • Fluency in one of the Sioux Lookout District dialects is an asset but not essential.
  • Commitment to the advancement of First Nations people.
  • Self-motivated, organized, able to work as a team member and independently.
