Academica Group is seeking a highly skilled and experienced legal professional for the role of Chief Counsel.
About the PositionThe successful candidate will oversee the University's legal affairs, providing strategic advice to the Senior Executive and Board of Governors. This includes managing litigation, drafting contracts and agreements, and preparing reports for the Board, external auditor, and Provincial Government.
The ideal candidate will have 5-10 years of progressive work experience in a legal capacity role, with a strong understanding of post-secondary operations and the ability to develop productive relationships with campus stakeholders and legal providers.
Responsibilities- Litigation Management: Manage the University's litigation and maintain relationships with external legal counsel.
- Contract Drafting and Review: Draft and/or review legal contracts, agreements, policies, and other documents for the University.
- Reporting and Investigations: Prepare legal reports and assist with internal reviews and investigations.
- Legal Advice: Provide legal advice to the Senior Executives and Board of Governors on diverse matters, including administrative law, governance, privacy law, employment, labour law, and legislative compliance.
- Team Leadership: Lead a high-performing team, including Legal Counsel, Privacy Officer, and Legal Assistant, by distributing work effectively and fostering professional development.
- Compliance: Identify and recommend procedures for compliance with applicable laws and University policies, including privacy and human rights legislation.
To be successful in this role, the candidate must have a current knowledge of the legal environment and its relation to the post-secondary context, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and a collaborative leadership approach.
A Bachelor of Laws degree or Juris Doctor degree and membership with the Law Society of Alberta are required. Experience in the post-secondary environment would be an asset.
The estimated annual salary range for this position is $144,874 - $182,251, based on industry standards and location.
