The Opportunity

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Teacher to join our Adolescent Intensive Services (AIS) team at IWK Health. As a member of our interdisciplinary treatment team, you will deliver education programming for school-aged adolescents at our on-site therapeutic classroom. Your expertise will help adolescents and families cope with mental health and addiction issues, and you will work collaboratively with the team to design, develop, and implement individual educational programming.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver education programming for adolescents with mental health and addiction challenges
  • Work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to design, develop, and implement individual educational programming
  • Provide consultation to ensure adequate consideration is given to learning deficits/challenges when addressing various needs
  • Coordinate the client's transition into community schools and monitor educational progress through treatment
  • Participate in case conferences and discharge planning meetings
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education required; Master's of Education preferred
  • Valid Nova Scotia Teacher's License, minimum TC5 required
  • Recent experience and/or training in working with children and youth with exceptionalities required
  • Recent experience working with adolescents with mental health and addiction challenges required
  • Successful completion of a Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Basic Life Support (BLS) program within the last 12 months required or successful completion of a BLS Renewal Challenge certificate
  • NVCI certification required
  • Familiarity with Department of Education Learning Outcomes for grades 7-12 required
  • Demonstrated ability to support the educational needs of youth with interrupted learning required
  • Demonstrated capacity to implement proactive and positive behaviour supports in the classroom required
