Job Summary:

Industrial Light & Magic, a pioneer in visual effects, is seeking a highly skilled Senior R&D Engineer to join our team. As a key member of our Research and Development group, you will be responsible for developing innovative algorithms, crafting artist-friendly user interfaces, and optimizing data management processes.

Our R&D group is at the forefront of developing cutting-edge technology that empowers our artists to create breathtaking visuals. With a team of over 70 visually-minded software engineers, we work closely with thousands of digital artists across our studios in San Francisco, Vancouver, London, Sydney, and Mumbai.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop innovative algorithms and tools for visual effects production
  • Craft artist-friendly user interfaces for our software applications
  • Optimize data management processes for large-scale visual effects production
  • Collaborate with engineers across all ILM studios on long-term software development projects and day-to-day artist support
  • Work with commercial software vendors to develop and deploy machine-learning-based tools
Requirements:
  • Proficiency in C++ and Python on Linux
  • Knowledge of visual effects principles and/or eagerness to learn
  • Experience with Maya, Houdini, Katana, Mari, or other commercial software applications
  • Experience with machine learning techniques, processes, and toolsets
  • Working knowledge of standard data formats: OpenEXR, OpenVDB, Alembic, USD, etc.
  • Enthusiasm for designing artist-friendly interfaces using GUI toolkits: Qt, PySide, QML, etc.
  • Appreciation of software development principles: object-oriented design, test-driven development, source code management, build and release processes
Education / Experience:
  • BS and/or advanced degree in computer science or related field, or similar experience
  • Typically 5+ years or demonstrated experience with professional software development and/or VFX production

ILM offers a competitive salary range of C$122,400 to C$156,800 per year, depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A full range of medical, financial, and/or other variable pay or benefits may be offered dependent on the level and position offered.
