The OpportunityAs a Capital Assets Accounting Specialist, you will be responsible for setting up and maintaining all assets in our SAP system, ensuring accurate and timely financial records. You will work closely with our procurement team to ensure that all capital expenditures are properly tracked and recorded.
Key Responsibilities- Set up and maintain all assets in SAP, including assigning correct asset classes and tracking approved capital cases.
- Maintain and reconcile fixed asset continuity schedules, depreciation entries, software, and amortization.
- Responsible for tracking all approved capital cases, assigning tracking and asset numbers.
- Ensure financial records are maintained in compliance with accepted policies and procedures.
- Responsible for setting up capital leases, booking all capital lease entries, and maintaining monthly schedules.
- Prepare and review all asset-related reports, including asset continuity, capital expenditures reports, and assets classified correctly.
- Responsible for coordinating and posting fixed asset accruals, ensuring reasonability in checking accrual requests.
- Coordinate with the procurement team to ensure that POs are linked to correct assets and approved capex spending is correct.
- Ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare monthly balance sheet reconciliations and coordinate trial balances across various entities.
- Liaise with stakeholders to provide financial support related to capital business cases (business analysts, procurement, operations) and update capital business case forms as required.
- Analyze complex data, prepare summaries, pivots, charts, and graphs as required for various requirements as processes develop and requirements are refined.
- Responsible for providing supporting reports for budget preparation, including projected carryforward, depreciation, and amortizations for future years for all entities.
- Monitor and track all prepaid accounts linked to assets and track progress vs. tracking of invoices related to assets.
- Maintain respect, effective communication, and relationships with management and staff of all levels.
- Responsible for intangible assets, including goodwill, and maintain tracking schedules.
- Responsible for the preparation and analysis of NPD (new product development) reports.
- Monitor and track grants related to assets/capital.
- Provide support for SRED (scientific research and experimental development).
- Review asset cash flow based on forecast submissions.
- Help coordinate backup and support for annual consolidated audits and global statutory audits as requested.
- Perform other duties as required.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- Excellent analytical skills.
- Advanced SAP skills in the asset module, including daily and month-end activities, posting journal entries, investigating discrepancies, and resolving issues.
- Advanced Excel skills and the ability to manage complex Excel files (pivot tables, vlookups, index match, etc.).
- Keen attention to detail and ability to self-check work.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team situation or work independently.
- Methodical in working spreadsheets, with the ability to draw out underlying trends and explain variances.
- Self-starter who can manage work under tight deadlines.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
To be considered for this role, you will need:
- Bachelor's degree in economics, business administration, or accounting, or equivalent.
- 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3+ years of fixed asset experience.
- SAP experience, with ECC 6, including FI/CO, MM, FA, and SD.
- Advance SharePoint knowledge.
- Advanced knowledge of the Adobe and Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- A professional Canadian accounting designation, such as CA, CMA, and/or CGA, is not required but will be an asset.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian GAAP/IFRS.
- Must have excellent spreadsheet skills, with demonstrated advanced user of Microsoft Excel.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of SAP systems, with experience in asset management being an asset.
- Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
- Ability to balance and prioritize multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Strong ability to think creatively, challenge the status quo, deal with ambiguity, and interact with a wide variety of personalities.
