Senior Process Specialist - Mineral Processing

Hatch Ltd. is seeking a highly skilled Senior Process Specialist to join our Metals Business Unit in the Minerals Processing practice.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing engineering services and/or field support to our clients, with a focus on mineral processing and metallurgy. This role will involve coordinating process engineering teams, overseeing the development of process engineering deliverables, and ensuring they meet project scope, schedule, and budget requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Manage interactions with mining, hydrometallurgy, engineering, processing, and operations teams on process performance and improvement engagements.
  2. Identify potential improvement test work through personal inspection of plant condition and performance.
  3. Coordinate or contribute to identifying, planning, and executing metallurgical test work (R&D) to optimize performance and manage external service providers conducting test work.
  4. Develop and complete the process engineering component of scoping, pre-feasibility, and feasibility studies for projects; manage scope, schedule, and budget for the process engineering team or overall project engineering team dependent on assignment.
  5. Provide frequent training, guidance, and supervision to junior colleagues.
  6. Oversee and guide the development of process engineering deliverables and tasks, including test work definition, design basis, design criteria, mass and energy balance, capacity studies, trade-off studies, engineering and equipment calculations, piping and instrumentations diagrams, process control logic, and operating and capital cost estimates.
  7. Manage the understanding, development, and implementation of existing and new process technologies.
  8. Facilitate and ensure that all required process expertise is included in the design to ensure design quality objectives are achieved and that the process solution delivers as per client requirements.
  9. Define unit operations and select equipment for projects.
  10. Support the commissioning of equipment and systems.
  11. Provide technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects.
  12. Independently contact clients, contractor representatives, and project field personnel to gather or provide information.
  13. Manage and monitor the quality of engineering deliverables.
  14. Prepare well-written project reports.
  15. Oversee and guide process engineering tasks on Minerals Processing projects, in a variety of commodities when requested as a process lead.

Qualifications and Experience:

  1. Relevant degree and suitable experience in metallurgy, mineral processing, or related field of work.
  2. 10+ years of experience working on site for a producing mine and/or in a consulting environment.
  3. Extensive design, commissioning, and/or operational experience of minerals processing equipment.
  4. Experience in Metallurgy software – METSIM, SysCAD, and other applicable programs.
  5. Experience in engineering planning for studies and projects in the process engineering discipline and engineering in general.
  6. Having a clear understanding of project stage gate requirements as they relate to scope, cost, and schedule.
